When memes were referenced as an example of remix culture it was the moment it clicked in my head how into it we are as a society. Even grandparents get to see and enjoy them sometimes!
In my opinion, remix culture is a more evident proof of our creativity, because creativity comes from mixing ideas or concepts that were not considered to be combined before. But with the difference of using pre-existing artworks rather than concepts that have not been developed yet.
And while copyright might seem more like a blurry notion in this culture, I believe there are circumstances were the sources can (and should) be attributed to the original creator and the mashup artwork to artist that combined those sources.
Taking these thoughts into consideration, I came up with 10 concepts mixing objects from Thingiverse!
1) Broccoli Hair
A classic. I wanted to go with a simple idea to start and broccoli hair (and grape hair) was the first thing to pop up in my mind. I used the
broccoli scanned by
m0Rya and used
3DWP's Albert Einstein bust as my hair model.
2) Banana Dress
Another classic that made me snort. Actually used this concept with some doodles in the past, but it surely brought me a little satisfaction seeing the
banana peel (
DiniertoDesigns) as a dress for this
little statue (
Fabula3D) in 3D and not just in paper.
3) Raven Scissors
I gave a little more thought on this one. I knew I wanted to use
LoboCNC's amazing
scissors design and I knew I wanted an animal's skull as the blades, but I was not sure which animal would suit best. Until I came across this
raven skull by
sprocket1597 which I feel gives enough sharp but old vibes to these scissors. Although I did add the lower blade by playing around with a truncated cone.
4) Gear Flower
Might seem a bit simple but I had fun with this one! A lot of gears look pretty fun and the ones in
WorksBySolo's math set were perfect for what I had in mind. I just needed to find a plant model, which is quite uncommon I discovered, but
CommeUneImpression's
piranha plant appeared as an epiphany! What a better plant to become a gear flower than a plant that comes from a pipe?
5) Reindeer Cactus
I also had fun with this one. I had another type of cactus in my mind (apparently called
saguaro) when I came up with this idea, but
KjeldSchmidt's little
cactus adaptation seemed like a funnier idea. So I removed the original antlers
yeg3d's reindeer model had and attached the rounded cactus.
6) Tentacle Door Handle
I was thinking of things that could replace a door handle and the spooky vibes came into my brain. I am a scaredy-cat, and if I were to go into a haunted house in some festival this would freak me out. Not because is scary but because it would be very dark, I would be very jumping, and my touch sensors would be extremely heightened. Touching something as textured as a
tentacle (
iorebos) in the dark while trying to open a
door (
isolt) would highly make me want to cry in that situation.
7) Citrus Perfume
What a better way to express a fragrance than using their main components as packaging? Design-wise, I would probably turn the
strawberry (
Meander_) upside down or lay it on its side as a support. But since this is just a concept I decided to have it standing and used
matthys_kenneth's
classic perfume bottle for the trigger and
Meander_'s
lemon model as the cushion that makes the trigger work.
8) Stone Cheese Grater
This looked better in my head. The idea was to have a
cheese grater (
kwg08) that looks like a stone structure to emphasize the idea of strength and sharpness. The
Pride rock from the Lion King (
pettiger15) felt like a great idea because it could also be a collectible or merchandise! I do not feel satisfied with the result, but I like the concept and it can serve me as a reference of my improvement.
9) Shell Headphones
Another mash-up based on an object's characteristics.
Headphones (
sprocket1597) are meant to provide the best sound and isolate the sounds that are out in the environment.
Turtle shells (
cipis) are meant to protect the turtle's body. You can guess where this is going.
10) Key Highlighter
And the last mash-up! A key highlighter, for the key points in texts. Probably a cringy train of thought but I think it is quite endearing, I would gift this or get it for myself. Again, these are just concepts, but I decided to use
MasterD's Zelda key model because it seemed like the most ergonomic key to hold while writing. For that same reason I tried to elongate thee body of the key and I used the tip of
kristyansmith24's highlighter model to complete the structure.
